Y'all, a horrible thing has occurred. I can't buy pumpkin (in the tin/can) anymore!!! There was one store in city centre (House of Frasier) that sold pumpkin, along with other American food items. I went in there last week to get several cans of pumpkin for our upcoming Thanksgiving festivities...yes, I know it's only October but I was planning ahead! I was slightly alarmed when I saw nothing on the shelf, but tried to remain calm. I very nicely asked the lady behind the counter and she informed that they (meaning House of Frasier?!?) are not in charge of their own purchasing anymore so she could not tell me if they would ever get any in. There was only cereal (Lucky Charms) and some cake mixes there, a few things of candy and some Oreos. They use to have quite a selection of American food, but not anymore. She told me to try Wally's - which is a little delicatessen that sells all kinds of food and does carry some American things. Marc and I went in there today and before I could even get the question out of my mouth, the manager was shaking his had head no. He said he has been trying to get some but has not been able to yet.
Do these people not know that Thanksgiving is not that far away? And that I have relied on them (House of Frasier) for almost 6 years? And that I make my Nannie's Pumpkin Bread every year starting in October? And that I really, really would rather use a can instead of getting all frontier-ish and cooking a real pumpkin?
I guess not.

Amanda- I think cans would be so heavy that the shipping costs would be outrageous! Oh well!

alternatively...if you want me to box up a few cans I'd be happy to ship...truly...I know it's the shipping costs are probably ridiculous considering its pumpkin but I would be happy to send some your way...I nearly burst into tears once in our local market over something similar. Good luck!

O frontierish is definitely not the fun way to go!! Truly sorry to hear no pumpkins.
If you do decide to cook the real pumpkin, it's not too hard. I did that when I grew pumpkins in my garden, and both times, it's been the best pumpkin pie/bread/ice cream ever. Just cut it in big chunks, place flesh side down on a greased or oiled pan, and bake at 375 for about 45 minutes or until it's soft. Then the peel should come off easily and discard the seeds (or save to roast them). THEN, you'll need to mash it - I used a food processor to get it really smooth. Good luck!

Can you buy pumpkins there? Because you just have to slice it, brush a little butter on it and put it in the oven. There is really not much work involved...not THAT frontierish. =) Although I do like your terminology!
