My Texas and Other Random Things

Well, this is kind of fun! A little piece of home that I can watch online!

The grey skies and rain are back in Cardiff. We had several days of lovely sunshine. It looks it's going to be a weekend full of rain. I took all the girls on the school run this morning. As soon as we got in the car it started raining pretty hard- good thing I had already decided I was going to drive! And it's also a good thing that we are prepared most of the time with umbrellas in the car and the rain shield for the stroller. Unfortunately for me, I can't hold an umbrella and push the stroller and hold an almost 3 year olds' hand...so I got SOAKED this morning. I was never more thankful for my new Lands End waterproof coat that I had ordered a while back- and even more thankful I didn't have a baby bump that kept it from being zipped up!

After we dropped Cerys off at school we went to do the grocery shopping. I had Addison's car seat and Bailey in the trolley, so by the time I made it to the check outs they were covered in food, ha! We got home and unloaded and it was then time to get Cerys from school. So it's been a busy, wet day! Once we got home and everyone fed, Cerys had room time and Bailey, Addison and myself took a LONG nap. I love it when that works out! Makes for a happier afternoon for all!

We do A LOT of playing indoors as you could probably imagine and it does drive me crazy at times. We do all the usual things- but I was just wondering if anyone had any fun, different ideas that you do on rainy days that you could share with me? My girls are pretty creative when it comes to playing together and have very active imaginations and I'm very thankful for that! Because of lack of space/storage we do not have a ton of toys, so they have to get creative! I was overwhelmed when walking through Target - so much STUFF! And like any parent, I would love to give them more, but I know that I would rather them be content with what they do have and learn to make up games, etc.

So, I would love for you to share some things that you do with your kids- but remember we can't go out and buy a lot of things, so keep it simple please! Thanks!

Mom would make pudding and let us "finger paint" with it at the kitchen table. I think we may have done Cool Whip, too? And shaving cream is always fun...and clean!

Do you have a McD's with an indoor playplace? That's what we do at least twice a week. We also have an indoor slide that was $90, and it folds up to be stored. I think it's a Step2 and is green. About 3 feet tall.

I just discovered an awesome thing - rice tubs!!! Someone suggested taking a plastic tub and filling it with rice. Then you can do all sorts of activities with it - you can hide things in it and then have the kids looks for them. Or you can have them spoon the rice into smaller containers and then dump it back in. Or you can have them hide things for each other. All three of my kids (8, 5, and 2) LOVE it! I'm working on other things to keep Steven occupied while I teach the girls, so as I come up with them I'll try to share them with you.

Hey Charity! I remember when we were kids, my mom would pull out the extra sheets and blankets and we'd make forts with the kitchen table and chairs. We'd usually have a picnic snack, read books, color, all the usual things, but for some reason it was so much more fun!

I bought the kids the crayola washable fingerpaints and stick them in my shower or the bathtub and let them finger paint all over the tub or the doors to my shower....when they are done I just turn the water on and it washes right out. Also...do you have the playdough recipie? that is always good with cookie cutters and stuff. And they love to play on the computer with the program starfall.com or maybe it is org?? And the pbskids.org website is good.

The boys love acting out their favorite movies or making up new storylines for the characters. We can fill an entire morning just doing that. We also do the indoor tent thing...it doesn't matter what you do, it's more fun under a sheet! Having a schedule of activities is a great idea and you don't have to be quite as creative or thinking on your toes! Each day of the week is assigned something (i.e., library day, craft, service/giving, playdates, baking, etc.) So on that day you do the assigned activity at some point during the day. We have also done the rice tubs as well as cornmeal tubs. Throw in a bunch of kitchen utensils and you've got an indoor sandbox!

I'm with Stephanie. Whenever we run out of ideas, it's bath time! My kids can play in a bath or shower for hours and the splashing always makes Koren sleep good afterward. And there are so many bath toys that don't take up much space and can just be tossed in a bin and put away.

My boys love to play with boxes. We dig out paints and craft supplies and they spend HOURS making houses and spaceships and stages for their action figures. Lots of fun!

When i was a child,i was veeeery lonely, and didnt had much friends... So my mom would make family game nights, she would hide little treats all over the house for us to find... It was very fun.

Once she got us white t-shirts and fabric paint. We made t-shirts with our hand print all over it!! That was fun too!

We used to live in a place with no options for kids... So she had to be veery creative... We would make picnics at the living room, bake cakes with funny shapes or made up stories about our dog, the stories was all about "If our dog could talk, what he would say?!"...

Hehe..
