Ok, I've had this lunch meat problem for several weeks.
One day, when buying sliced ham and turkey for our sandwiches I noticed on the package that it said, for example from the ham package- "ham re-formed from selected cuts of pork leg meat."
Ok, does that make any else sick? I'm not sure where I've been my entire life, but has lunch meat like this always been "formed from" other cuts? This is seriously causing me problems because I just can't bring myself to buy any of it or eat it! My girls love PB and J anyway, like their Daddy, but I usually eat ham or turkey on a sandwich and I just don't think I can anymore.
Today at the store, I picked up almost every package to see and they all said this same thing- on the ham, turkey and chicken slices. I went over to the deli and looked at those, and even the freshly sliced stuff said that same thing. What ever happened to just a slice of turkey? Marc was just laughing at me the whole time because I refused to buy any of it. And I really don't want to eat PB and J everyday like him!
So, has anyone else noticed this? Does it bother you? What do you do about it?
I know this is really random, but it's really bothering me. As if you couldn't tell. :)

Gross. Maybe that's why I don't like sandwiches.
So, maybe you could buy a turkey breast and just slice it thin for sandwiches? Or maybe you could start eating salads! LOL!
This is EXACTLY why I don't eat lunch meat. It's made from scraps, mashed into a form, then sliced. Yuck! I can't stand the thoughts of eating it. If I want a sandwich I usually make tuna salad or chicken salad or piminto cheese myself. It's cheaper and I have more control over what I'm eating, kinda, I think. My Mom worked at a meat packing plant in Atlanta years ago, like before WWII and she says you wouldn't eat hot dogs if you knew what was in them. She never told me and I never asked, I just don't eat hot dogs either.
I haven't bought sandwich meat for years, mainly because of all the nitrites in it. If you want something that is actually healthy and fresh you have to buy a fresh turkey, ham, or chicken; cook it yourself; then slice it. Of course, here in Kenya I haven't had that problem b/c any kind of meat is just too expensive anyway! We are unintentionally well on our way to becoming vegetarians! We usually average about once a week with some kind of meat. Jeremy is quite sad about that. But he'll get over it! :) And we'll all be healthier for it...looking at the bright side. Sorry, that didn't really give you any advice. But at least you know you are not alone!
Horrid description! I think it just means that they had to "form" it into that shape. There's some unhealthy processing going on too but no different to what's been done before. It's probably some EU ruling about having to label things clearly. Like they wanted to re-name our chocolate vegelate as it didn't contain enough cocoa!
If you don't drink the water, eat the food, or breathe the air you'll be fine! (Dead, but fine.)
Levi loves ham so we always have it. Just stop reading the packet.
We'd like you guys to come over soon. I'll email you this evening with a choice of dates x
Move to France!!! You can get slabs of rotissery (sp?) meat already sliced and sold in little plastic bags like sandwich meat. Sadly, it's all very expensive, and you can only get 6 slices of any kind of meat at a time. :( We eat it thought because peanut butter is even more expensive!!!! ;)
Remember those old commercials on TV that called chicken McNuggats "parts is parts."
It's been going on for years.
If you find a deli where you can actually see the roast or turkey or whatever being sliced, you can tell if it is a reprocessed slab or the real thing.
I HATE the texture - - - too wet and slimy - - - of the reprocessed stuff.
I guess you could roast beef or turkey just for the purpose of having it for sandwiches, slice it up and freeze it in "lunchable" portions. It would be a lot of work ONCE and then you'd have the benefit for weeks.
I'm SO there with you. Today I was looking at turkey bacon (after having been totally weirded out by a "How It's Made" show) and saw that it was "reconstituted" from parts. EEEEWWW! There used to be a brand of lunch meat that I would buy that was all natural, but I've had a very hard time finding it lately. I've recently converted to wrap's with meat chunks inside.
I got your comment. I'm surprised you can't get pimento in Wales. Try using dill pickle cubes instead of pimento. It's real good in pimento cheese, well in that case, it would be dill pickle cheese. Right? LOL! Homemade is so much better than store bought.
You never wondered why the slices are usually perfect squares or perfect circles?
I just try not to think about it. I like ham too much to be too grossed out. :)
